Worn Plating Is Not the Same as a Worn-Out Piece
Most items that arrive from Basingstoke are not broken. Will plating cover an engraving inside a ring?
No. The layer is thin enough that an inscription stays readable, and engraving is one of the main reasons people replate rather than replace. If the lettering is already faint we will point that out at assessment, since polishing softens shallow detail.
My white gold ring has gone warm and yellowish. Is that the same job?
It is a different one. White gold is finished as a separate service rather than through the yellow, rose and antique tones, and a warm cast usually means that finish has worn rather than the ring changing. Send a photograph and we will tell you which of the two your piece needs.
My ring has gone silver-coloured underneath. Can that be fixed?
Almost always, yes. That is plating worn through to the base metal, and it is the most common job we do. The piece is cleaned, polished and replated across the whole surface so the colour is even rather than patched.
